I’m looking for dark matter, the invisible and exotic particles which make up most of the material in not just galaxies, but the entire Universe. It would be good to know what the Universe is made of, but finding dark matter probably won’t help the world directly on a day to day basis. However scientists often discover interesting and useful things accidentally, while trying to do something else. For instance the World Wide Web was invented by a particle physicist called Tim Berners-Lee at CERN as a way of sharing data between scientists spread out all over the world. We now use it for all sorts of thing everyday, including ‘I’m a scientist’!
I simply don’t know yet.
I’m still looking for what I can do best to help, I’m still learning about stuff since I’m sort of still a student. Hopefully soon I’ll figure it out by trying new things.
.
In the meantime, I do every little thing I can to help – walking places instead of driving, eating less meat, recycling and just throwing less stuff away. You can do all these little things too! It’s not about NEVER driving or eating meat, but about reducing it whenever you can 🙂
Hmm, not a lot yet! Hopefully when I finish my PhD I will have enough knowledge to be an expert in growing new bones, and I can do experiments no one else has done yet!
Most advances that help the world are discovered by accident or are a by-product of the technology developed for science experiments.
The CAT scanner was actually invented to look inside Moon rock, but has since been used to save millions of lives!! So my research might be able to help the world in ways I haven’t even thought of yet (hopefully).
